Joining Martin’s X series, the more attainable line-up in the brand’s repertoire, are three new dreadnoughts: the DX1AE Macassar Burst, DX2MAE and DX420. No prizes for guessing which has that artwork.
The DX1AE Macassar Burst is the only solid-top—in this case Sitka spruce—acoustic of the trio. That said, its back and sides are still made of high-pressure laminate (HPL), which can better withstand temperature changes yet may be trickier to repair should things go awry. And as its name suggests, the DX1AE has a vintage sunburst finish.
The DX2MAE is the most understated of the bunch. Inspired by Martin’s 15 and 17 series, the acoustic is completely constructed from HPL, with a mahogany-patterned finish, and is the brand’s full-sized take on the 0XMAE.
And then we have the DX420. It’s an X series version of the D-420, and has a HPL top, sides and back. The intoxicating illustration, by visual artist Robert Goetzl, is also almost identical to the one on the D-420, depicting slogans and graphics that Willie Nelson would be proud of.
All three guitars are also fitted with Fishman Sonitone electronics.
The DX1AE lists for $849, the DX2MAE for $729, and the DX420 for $799. For more information, check out martinguitar.com.
